We're in the summer of 1985 and Europe is at war...

14 May 1985 - 0600 AM

The start of WW3 was nor heralded by the scream of artillery barrages, but by the rotor noises of Mi28 transport choppers...aiming at Nato logistical structures...one of them was on the Nedjerossa little city...

Scenario : Air Assault
This scenario is the beginning of ww3, the US have to protect 3 buildings for 6 turns...too bad the 3 squads that starts the scenario have to pass a MC to move or fire and they are outnumbered almost 5:1.

Turn One : Soviet Initiative
Before the start, the US were enjoying a rare moment of peace, soviets training drills were nothing out of the ordinary and the days were passing as normal.
Not on 14 of May were, at dawn, four soviet's transport helicopters and a Hind trespassed the iron curtain.
Each helicopter was carrying two squads and a leader, hoping to use numbers to overwhelm the three lonely squads each one guarding a building.
The first chopper was welcomed by a US mg fire that damaged it and forced it to leave the map before disemarking.
The others managed to succesfully land their payloads and ww3 officially started.

Turn two - three : Soviet Initiative
The soviet forces were making progresses, two of three objectives were secured and they were reorganizing to get the last one.

Turn four : Soviet Initiative
US reinforcements arrived. The Hind and the AT-3 tried to destroy the M1 just arrived to relieve the remnants of Team Yankee, but they both failed and the ATGM team got shaken by OP fire.
The rest of the American units arrived at the town's outskirts.
The soviets cleared the last US squad survived from the beginning and claimed the last objective.

Turn five : Soviet Initiative
Both forces clashed into a heavy urban house-by-house streets fight and casualties were mounting.
The just arrived US fresh forces manged to clear the soviets from one of the objectives and got a heavy foothold into the city.

Turn six : Soviet Initiative
The soviets here tried a last rush to reclaim the objective, destroyed an M113 in close assault and eliminated almost all the US forces on the objective but the assaulters were killed too in the process.
The M1 just barely missed the Hind by 1.

The scenario ended with an American victory.

Thanks for posting Rydo! Nice, is this a ‘custom’ scenario/campaign?

I picked up Heroes Against the Red Star last year but have yet to crack it still playing North Africa scenarios.

Hello Captain!

It is the first scenario chronologically in the module.

The campaign game is very easy to set up, i made it like that:
- There are two factions ( nato and ussr )
- Each victory gives 1 point to that faction
- Casualties are recorded to see the brutality of the conflict and to see at the end if the faction who won have won decisively or in a phirric way

Playing on the big map is fun, but honestly i can't wait to go into the small maps and using the french!

Ps: i failed to record that, but on turn one the soviet jet arrived and laid waste on the us.
By far the more action packed module.

We're in the summer of 1985 and Europe is at war...

14 May 1985 - 0700 AM

After the first soviet incursion into west germany, the Nato forces were in chaos. The reds used that moment to start their main push into west germany. But before that, they sent a recon battallion to scout the little village of Starklos, an important route to the main city of Nedjerossa.

Scenario : First Probe
This scenario is set after the Air Assault. The soviet 1st tank division is sending a little force from his 23nd recon battallion to scout the area of Starklos. To their luck, the Americans were few and engaged only if necessary...on the soviet side, that wasn't really a problem.

Turn One : Soviet Initiative
The soviets were given a good mixture of line troops, some elites and two vehicles, a BMP1 and a BTR-70.
The US on the other side had access to some good units, but too few to really pose a threat to the reds recon team.
US are not placed on the board from the beginning but set up each impulse, the soviets start in the open and fully visible.
The start of the game saw the communists quickly advancing into the south portion of the city, the US choosed to deploy in the objective buildings a little back, giving the soviets a chance to create a base of fire.
The American decision was dictated by the fact that after turn three, if the 2d6 roll is higher than the US good order units and SW in play they get a warning, after the second one they lose.

Turn two : Nato Initiative
Even with the initiative, the US couldn't do much to stop the reds, far outnumbered they still reduced a squad but casualties were mounting soon than expected.
The soviets carefully advanced, covered by the heavy firepower of the two vehicles.

Turn three : Nato Initiative
The soviets were in complete control of the southern portion of the city and launched a massive human wave that completely overrun the two squads and the leader in the west objective building, both were eliminated by a 2-6-4 with an RPK.
Both soviet leaders were shaken in the process of the human wave right in the middle of the street and the vehicles had to retreat to provide them some cover.
Soon they reorganized and forced the Americans on the last building.

Turn four : Nato Initiative
First warning arrived.
The US rallied what was left of its forces but they were outnumbered and encircled. With fire from all directions they had to select their targets carefully.
But the soviets were ready to sacrifice everything, and throwed squad after squad in the streets, some were killed but at the end they managed to eliminate another US squad and a leader in the second objective building.

Turn five : Soviet Initiative
The US received the second warning and immediately lost due to heavy losses. The soviets won.

I remember playtesting these scenarios and how bloody they were. The scenarios played quickly, especially the AFV heavy ones, since it is usually one shot, one kill. Lots of wreck markers. It is a good module.

Thanks for the AARs!

We're in the summer of 1985 and Europe is at war...

14 May 1985 - 0900 AM

The recon mission on Starklos was a success, and the American forces guarding it were succesfully pushed back. The main push on Nedjerossa was to commence. Soviet 1st tank division first echleon was waiting on the forests east of the town ready for the order: attack!

Scenario : Red Backer One
This scenario puts a soviet armored company against a reinforced US armored platoon.
The soviets have all tanks and 6 turns to clear all hexes of the river's east edge. They're coming from uphill, with an armored leader. Their mission isn't one sided, as a small American mechanized infantry is waiting in Starklos with a M47 dragoon hoping to slow down the soviet big push west. They're more of a nuisance but if used right they could give at the armored platoon enought time to emplace itself into the city and decimate the incoming horde.

Turn One : Soviet Initiative
The soviet armored leader was carefully watching the moving US forces in the suburbs of Nedjerossa.
After taking a long breath, he ordered the pre-registered 122mm artillery and smoke missions. Those hit nothing but created a screen from were the soviets could manuever.
The only three IFV avaible to the reds were immediately sent into Starklos to deal with the atgm team and concealed infantry.
After having took care of that, the main rush of T72s started.

Turn two : Nato Initiative
The M1s from team Yankee started opening fire on advancing soviets.
The fight for Starkloss was continuing but looking bad for the Americans, as two T72s joined to help the IFVs.

Turn three : Nato Initiative
The T72s were into the streets of Nedjerossa, the M1s continued to destroy them but were overwhelmed and one M1 was knocked out.
Starkloss was lost and the last pocket of US resistance was beign destroyed.

Turn four : Soviet Initiative
All the city was swarmed by communist's tanks, they were able to finish the remnants of the US infantry hiding into some of the buildings and knocked out the second M1.
Last touching action was the US armor leader and his M1 rushing into the city, destroying a T72, surviving two frontal hits but then beign encircled and destroyed by a T72 from the rear.

Turn five : Nato Initiative
The US forces were all wiped out and turn 5 couldn't be played as soviets achieved complete dominance over the city.
The Americans fought hard and spawned a hero, but they were not enought to stop the soviet forces.

Aftermath
The soviet first push was succesful but casualties were almost at 50% so they opted for a strategic retreat, because if the Americans were to counterattack, all progresses would have been lost, so an infantry company was sent to garrison the eastern part of the city.
Back few miles an older US captain was yelling his men to jump on the M133s, "Come on boys, at once!".
A young soldier approached him and asked "Sir, why we're going there? Isn't that Red backer one area?", the captain looked at him at answered "We're red backer one now boy, now get on the vehicle." "Yes sir!".

A little further were two soldiers watching:
PFC1: Where are they going? Soviet 1st tank division is 'bout to cut the route south. It looks like they're gonna be surrounded."
PFC2: "They're team yankee, they got used to be surrounded."

We're in the summer of 1985 and Europe is at war...

14 May 1985 - 0945 AM

After the first thrust into west-germany, the soviet 1st tank division had to keep pushing nato armored forces, leaving pockets of resistance behind. They weren't really caring about that as usually that dirty job was given to the follow on infantry sections.

Scenario : Hot Pocket
This scenario is right after Red Backer One, and somehow the americans sent reinforcements into Starklos, but this time the soviets are coming from all directions, so forming a defensive perimeter would be even harder.

Turn One : Soviet Initiative
1.jpg

The soviets decided to attack from three different directions, but that its just a ruse, as the real plan is to divide the americans trought all the city, forcing them to lose time in case they would need to redeploy their units to defend a new area.
The opening scenario was signed with the T62 knocking out a M113 right off.
The rest is just a massive soviet advance.
All the random smokes from the wrecks proved to be crucial in the soviet success in the advance manuevers toward the town.
To note, a very brave M113 close assaulting a soviet platoon, decimating it and running away near Nedjerossa, it was later missed by an opportunity fire from the BMP1.

Turn two-three : Soviet-Nato Initiative
2.jpg

The BMP took revenge and easily destroyed the M113.
The rest of the turns were a mix of fires and manuevers from the communist side.

Turn four : Nato Initiative
3.jpg

The americans falled back to their second defensive positions, while the reds completely overrun the southern portion of the town.
The easy part was done, getting into the suburbs of the city...now the hard part was ready to begin...the human wave in an all or nothing assault.

Turn five : Soviet Initiative
4.jpg

The bloodbath begun, but the soviets were ready for the sacrifice, all units were expendables.
Nato opened fire and inflicted massive casualties but still the soviets managed to come close in the assault of one of the two bigger buildings in Starklos.

Turn six : Soviet Initiative
5.jpg

Soviet forces were now in both the last two buildings, the casualties were so high that retreating now was unthinkable.
They were winning, and the americans were broken beyond repair. The bulk of the US force in defense was overrun and defeated, now the reds were just cleaning the last pockets of resistance.

Turn seven : Soviet Initiative
The soviets took a deep breath and closed the chapter on the capture and clearing of Starklos.
All the americans were eliminated, but they went out putting a very tought fight.
They were able to inflict almost three times their size in casualties.
The reds won decisively but took the hit. The group sent clearing the town received almost 60% combat losses reducing his efficiency drastically.
The americans are learning how to fight this new kind of warfare, the soviets are learning about the cost it would take from now on to defeat them.
Extra: the T62 was abandoned after a failure in rubbling a building...woops.
6.jpg
Starklos is in complete soviet controll.
