Very good topographical maps were available at the time so a commander would study those to get a feel for the terrain and what could be seen from there.
John Toland's Rising Sun has a very good and in-depth description of the Guadalcanal campaign from both sides, but more so from the Japanese side. Well worth a read for the entire Pacific Campaign as well.
@Grognerd I have completely missed this one. I started work on a Juno-Caen map a long time ago but lost energy to complete it. It was supposed to be a D-day to D+7 scenario. I used 10 m elevation intervals - what do you use. If you think it will be of any help I would be happy to send it to you.
@Bie, I have for a while worked on a guide that visually shows the different movement/attack formations, their footprint and the percentage of personnel that can fire/be fired upon for the front/left/right/back side of the formation as well as security and cohesion (basically a visual version of...
I run Google Earth Pro and have found no tool for exporting GPS or topographical data. Maybe I'm missing something. If possible it would be an awesome tool for creating maps for Combat Mission games as well.
That's quite an impressive list - good job.
I understand it is work in progress, but can you shed some more light on (and how it will change scenario/map making):
Geo Implementation for importing GIS elevation data.
That's exactly how I started with CO2 - HttR and Kershaw's book :)
Perfect to learn history with a book and a game combined.
Seeing you're a CM player - have you played the German campaign in the Market Garden module, called "A Moment in Time"? I played it after reading the book as Kershaw...
Can't remember the name, but there is a Youtube series for "The Road to Bastogne" scenario, where he discusses the basics of the game in detail in the first episodes. He then describes his strategy in detail. Very helpful. Otherwise I would suggest playing the game but resist micromanaging. Give...
Thanks for the Steam keys - easy to create in the account. Feeling stupid though, how do I go about things in Steam? Should I proceed like buying the modules and then entering keys or?
I get what you are aiming at, but isn't this always the case with all games? Those who pay up first pay the most and after a few years down the road it is much cheaper to buy and usually in a better state because of patches. Just check the Steam sale, not uncommon with markdowns of 75-90%.
