Weight restrictions for the different types of bridge would add realism , eg an 80 ton Jagdtiger should not be able to cross a light bridge . Also another class of bridge called a " Hasty Bridge " requiring only a few hours to construct . This " Hasty Bridge " would be restricted to Minor rivers and Streams and would permit only foot movement and light vehicles eg jeeps , le Pkw - car , etc .

In CO2 there are 3 types of linear water feature ; " major river " , " minor river " and " stream " . nothing can cross a major river except at a crossing medium ( bridge , ferry , ford ) . Foot units can cross minor rivers at a cost . All movement types can cross a stream at a cost . I think the water features in " Manhay " are streams .

are small rivers like in Manhay Crossroads handicap for the troops?

To various degrees. You can right click on a spot to get a little popup listing the travel effects of that patch of land.

Here you notice that the Minor Road alone gives Infantry 99% movement while Motorized vehicles get 65% movement.
The Stream itself drastically slows things down, with Infantry getting only 13% and Motorized vehicles a nearly static 3% movement.
However where the two are both in effect the slowdown is not nearly as bad, a 2% loss for Infantry and a 7% loss for Motorized over just a Minor Road.

So definitely try to cross the Streams where a Road is. South from that area in my example are some streams that pass through Pine Woods. Pine Woods really slow down Motorized anyway, but both combined is often a 0% - 1% for Motorized and single digits for Infantry.

This feature was asked many times, but the implementation requires additional movement tables for new "Heavy Motorized", "Medium Motorized" etc movement types, which means lot of additional calculations and lookups.
(That surely doesn't mean that it can't be implemented, it's just the reason why it wasn't done back then. Dave surely could provide more details on this).
