In 5.0, Rule 1.6.5 point 1) states "The Mortar can fire directly at units in spotted hexes in its LOS. Roll 2d6, choose the higher of the dice and add it to the TOTAL FP of the attack the Mortar is participating in, apply all the DFT modifications and resolve the attack."

Does the attack get to add another 1d6 on top of the "pick the higher of the 2d6" or is the "pick the higher of the 2d6" instead of the normal 1d6 that is added to the FP?

The example is pretty much self-explanatory;

Support Weapon Example 4: A British 1-7-4-5 Squad with a 51 mm Mortar SW fires at a target five (5) hexes away. The British player rolls 2d6, selects the higher die, adds it to three (3) (3 = the Squad’s IFP of 1 + the 51 mm Mortar’s FP of 2), and resolves the attack as per 5.0.

So, in this case, you would attack with best of 2d6 +3, for a end result between 4 and 9
