Escorts and chart 5.6

Hello,
I have just started playing this game but have some questions regarding this table. I am not sure when you roll the 2nd part of this table--Determine number of fighters. Here's how I've been playing:

Example:
1. Target card states 6 bombers and 6 fighters.
2. Roll on table 5.6 for type of escort you get (P47, P38, P51). Depends on turn.
3. Roll on the 2nd table to determine if you actually get those 6. Is this correct?
This means you should get 6 (per target card), but may get 0 to 8??
4. Determine number of aces

On page 15 of the rules, it has a section for number of fighters you get if you pickup additional fighters during the mission at the rendezvous sites. You will get 0 to 6 fighters. With the reduced range. This is clear.

I've probably missed it, but I'm not sure where in the rules it states to actually roll on that table for actual number of escorts (3 above)

Hi Chris,
Pre-mission (4.5 Coordinate with Escort Fighters) you are using table 5.6 only to determine the type of escort fighter.
The mission card already determined the number of fighters, so you roll on the table only once.

For the rendezvous sites use rule 5.6 page 15, it lays how how to generate new escorts.

Great! Thanks, Tony (fellow Pittsburgher). I was playing wrong but it made for some interesting situations to be sure. The 6 P-51s I was expecting didn't show up!
