it's clear that you use the hexes travelled to determine what column to use on the outbound leg to the target.

However, what distance do you use for the inbound route returning to England if there are several routes with different distances to the 8th AF Base box?

I've used the distance of my actual planned route vs an alternative that may be shorter ( but to be avoided due to flak)

Mike,
Use the number of boxes that is more advantageous to you. It's an abstraction of distance not a literal tracking of the route.
