I thought I would post this little gem here so that if it ever raises its head again we know what to do. Paul Scobell had installed the game on a new machine and was running into an error when the game started. When the startup screen appeared it threw up an alert that the sound buffer was not working. This set off an intense investigation involving both of us and we both had a good laugh when we discovered it was because there was no sound driver installed on the machine because it had no DVD player nor any other sound input or output devices. So Direct X had not bothered to load a sound driver. Once he plugged in a set of speakers it loaded a driver and the game ran. So that was a trap for the unwary.
