Game crashes after start selected

I can select a scenario and click Start. The game map with the units briefly appears and then the game crashes and I am returned to the Steam launcher.

There a 3 of us reporting this on Steam Discussions

We are working with Steam to correct this and if you recently purchased it please request a refund. I will post here as soon as we figured out with Steam what is wrong.
