I have the older versions of World at War and was wondering if you could use the rules from World at War: 85 for the older titles?

The two editions are incompatible. Most especially the counter values and how they are used are different. As an extreme example you simply won't have the correct values on any onboard artillery piece. In the old edition to use the new on-board artillery rules. There are lots of symbols on the old counters that were taken out when the new counter values were developed from scratch.
