Buttoned vehicles are invulnerable
(if armored) to small-arms fire (17.2),
but cannot fight as well as an opened
vehicle (no OFT modifier).
17.4 Mortar WTs and Off-Board Artillery
vs. Vehicles
Mortars WTs (18.1) and Off -Board Artillery
(18.2) affect vehicles the same
as small-arms fire; however, both OPEN
AND BUTTONED armored vehicles compare
their lowest Armor Factor and terrain
TM plus 1d6 to the attacker’s FP
plus 1d6. A vehicle with an unarmored
facing is attacked as if it was unarmored.
The above rule states the Buttoned Vehicles are invulnerable to small arms fire. 18.2 treats fire from WT and off-board Artillery is treated as small arms.
What is the Armor factor and Terrain Tm plus the 1d6 for?

This means that, although the Mortars WT and Off-board Artillery follow the general procedure presented in 17.2, there is an exception; buttoned vehicles are NOT invulnerable to them. Also, these attacks affect the whole hex, and not only one target (leg or vehicle) in the hex

Thanks for the reply. If I am understanding your answer, Mortar WT and arty can destroy buttoned armor?

No. If you look at the Damage Check Table, the best you can hope for is Abandoned and this requires the vehicle to fails a Morale Check by the équivalent of 3x its morale. Since 90% of armored vehicle have a Morale of 6, it would requires a +12 Damage Check (DC), combined with a roll of 6 from the vehicle, to get there. And to get a +12 DC, you need to roll a 6 on a +7 attack while your opponent opposed die roll is a 1. And to get a +7 attack is only possible with an Off-board Artillery strike of 8 FP (something I can't remember ever seeing) against a Armor Value of 1, in terrain with no target modifier.

As you can see, you probably have more chance to win the lottery than this happening...

What could more easily happens though is shaking a vehicle twice, causing abandonment.

Thanks for the clarification. Just hung up on the immune to small arms fire when it says Mortar Wt and OBA are treated as small arms fire when there is an exception to the rule. You got a tough job.
