Assault on Vireville - Vireville, France; June 7, 1944
The French village of Vireville straddled the road from Utah Beach to St. Come du Mont - a location key to the Americans and Germans alike.
The Yanks captured Vireville on June 6, 1944, but on June 7, most of the 2nd Battalion of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment vacated the town, leaving only a small holding force from the 1st Battalion to guard the village. It was then the Germans decided to mount a counterattack. The battle was a wild free-for-all as first one side then the other sent reinforcements; and although the Germans briefly recaptured most of Vireville, by the end of the day the American paratroopers had driven them out.
Overview : After the hard landing in Europe and the last hours passed with scarce supply fighting the enemy, men of 1st battalion of Easy company were relaxing a bit waiting for orders from the HQ.
Corporal Medrow and his team were inspecting the town's buildings looking for something interesting to do in the now silent city.
A small squad was sent to the search too while a full one was looking the crossroads with their M1919A4.
Then out of nowhere the M1919 guy noted something in the distance...a human figure hiding in the brushes with a scope. He immediately called his fellow buddy pointing the direction on the figure.
There was no doubt, after Pvt. Peter yelled "Who's there?" the figure immediately opened fire on the Yankee.
Hearing the shots, Cpl. Medrow immediately asked what was happening!
" The Germans are arriving Sir! "
" Damnit! " The Corporal immediately called the radio guy and ordered his forces to spread around the city.
They were sure the Germans were coming...but from what direction?
Turn One - American Set up
The Americans tried to occupy more buildings possible while at the same time be sure to guard all the entry points from where the Germans could have arrived.
Turn One - German Set up
German forces would enter from the right edge and thus forcing the Americans to modify their posture mid turn.
German tactic was to attack the city from two directions, right from where they were coming and also detaching a small part of their forces to the north to try to force the Yanks to spread too thin and having an edge in firefights.
Turn One - What happened - German Initiative
The Americans hold their fire trying to understand where the Germans where going.
The Germans proceeded with their initial plan and nothing interesting happened.
This was mainly a turn of manuever.
Turn Two - Starting situation - German Initiative
Having the initiative again, the Germans moved their forces up north, leaving a half squad and the medic in the rear as a strategic reserve, out of range from the American forces but close enought to aid possible shaken units.
The Americans hold their ground not moving too much to not giving away their intentions and also they were waiting the right opportunity to reveal their Sniper.
Lt. Koch moved north occupying a building while Lt. Plassmann pushed west.
As soon as Lt. Plassmann and his men approached the building, a Sniper carefully waiting his prey to come under his scope opened fire on the German group hitting the Liutenant himself!
He immediately shake and after that the American squad armed with the M1919 opened fire on them without success.
But the Germans where waiting for the Sniper to appear and prepared a squad that was waiting in the rear to take care of him.
The squad that tryied to pin Lt. Plassmann men down used Reaction Opportunity Fire to try to stop the squad rushing to the Sniper position but they failed and the Sniper was quickly dispached by the well trained German squad.
Turn Two - Situation at the end
Turn Three - Starting situation - American Initiative
German rally phase was very fast...so fast that Lt. Plassmann remained shaken and the Americans were ready to act!
This turn saw the shake of the German half-squad while they were getting cover in a building and a general exchange of fire. But nothing more.
The German squad in the south proceeded its way to encyrcle the Americans and Lt. Koch decided to hide in the building and aid the failed push in the east instead of risking to get himself too much out of range of the bulk of his forces.
Turn Three - Situation at the end
Tunr Four - Starting situation - German Initiative
The situation was not looking good for the Germans. One leader was ducking, a half-squad was hiding too and the Americans were looking tought.
Lt. Plassmann remained shaken while in the north the medic succesfully healed the guys shaken and the Germans acted.
In the south the German squad proceeded to take a building escaping an Opportunity Fire by the American half-squad in the west.
More shootign occured as the American squad with the M1919 opened fire on Lt. Plassmann and his men shaking them too.
With Half their army blocked in the east Lt. Koch decided to risk it all!
He sent a half-squad out in the streets to try to get the M1919 out. Cpl. Medrow opened Op Fire withour effect but hold on with ROF to see what Lt. Koch would have done later.
The American squad that opened fire on Lt. Plassmann men was not of the same idea and ROF on the German unit, rolled a six and managed to shake again the half-squad, leaving them in the open!
Lt. Koch was waiting for that! With the M1919 too busy and Cpl. Medrow men with just ROF rushed to their position engaging in melee Medrow and his men!
The melee was a fail and without any losses from both parts they continued to fight.
Turn Four - Situation at the end
Turn Five - Starting situation - German Initiative
Rally phase went good and the Lt. Plassmann and his men, aided by the medic, fully recovered.
Now the tides were uncertain, only the melee would have showed who could have got the edge on the last turn!
The recovered Liutenant tried to suppress the M1919 but both him and his squad failed to spot and they stayied there still scared of what happened in the previous turns.
The Americans activated the full squad with the M1919 and thinking that their Coproral was having the situation over control decided to secure the east flank opening fire on Lt. Plassmann and his men.
The fire was a miss.
In the south, the lonely squad procedeed to secure another building but was stopped by the American half-squad and shaken in the process.
Too far from the main force, that squad was basically out of the game.
Now only the melee was the crucial turning point!
Medrow activated and instead of withdrawing decided to fight back Lt. Koch and his Grenadiers...gunshots, explosions, screams...at the end, the experience of Koch and his Grenadiers proved to bee too much for the Yanks...they were eliminated completely.
Now the situation was very close. The Germans occupied 3 buildings out of 4 needed to win.
Turn Five - Situation at the end
Turn Six - Situation at the beginnign - American Initiative
This is where the match winner was decided!
The US advantage was perfect, immediately the M1919 opened fire on Koch and his men!
If this fire caused them to shake then the other US half-squad would have moved in capturing the Germans and winnign the game...too bad the fire missed completely.
But not all was lost until Lt. Koch rushed to the south and occupied the last building needed for the victory.
Lt. Plassmann opened fire on the M1919 team but they were too entrenched in the stone building.
Turn Six - Situation at the end
Game Over - German Victory
Aftermath
Some elements of the 1st Battalion perished in the following battle. Corporal Medrow died alongside his men trying to defend a key objective in Vireville.
The American squads that survived surrendered soon after, giving the Germans full control of the city.
When the 2nd Battalion received the news of the German occupation of Vireville they immediately organized with the US Army forces landed at Utah Beach and effectively pushed the Germans out of the town.
The Germans opposed a fragile resistance and was pushed back. They tried to get the city but after a series of failed counterattacks they abandoned the idea and retreated inland.
END!
Hey guys the report ends here!
In real life the Germans never get the city back but in my game happened! It was fun and playied till the end!
Now in the game i have used a lot the Reaction Opportunity Fire to test it.
It literally change how the game feel.
Since all units can now double fire, you must think more.
Before in LnL tactics could have worked much more, but now with this rule you have to really think what you want to do and if you want to take risks.
There were situations were i was literally scared on sending my men in the open even if the enemy fired once because of this new rule and this forced me to act more realistically, i effectively spread out my forces trying to get the tactical advantage needed to get a desired position.
Now defenders are more scary than ever but with the good tactic even impossible positions can be cleared.
Lock'n Load team good job.
