Regarding Escort

Good day all
I am currently using latest 2.4 rev6 rules after a long break of this beautiful game but I am not sure I fully understood some steps especially on rule 4.1.8 for selecting the escort.
Assuming I am playing 1944 Mission Card of Berlin where Escort value is 8, do I need to roll a 1D6 just to see if those 8 are either P38, P47 or P51? If so in the event I am eligible to use P38 is it true they can escort me up to 8 boxes counting from Air Force base?
When I am reaching any rendezvous site what is that mean, in our example the first one between Rotterdam and Munster where I can apply rule 4.2.6. if I am lucky enough to roll a new type of escort from where I am start counting their range

Hi, yes.

The Mission Card says "how many" (in your example 8) and the Escort Availability Table says "what type" (ignore the bottom of Escort Availability Table - the bottom is used merely when you play with an advanced rule 11.9).
If you roll 3-4 on turn 13-21 you will get eight P-38s. Then you roll for Aces (Ace Table) to see how many of them will be there for you.

P-38's maximum safe range is 8, and so they will escort you either:
- 8 boxes counting from Air Force base if the target is farther than 8 boxes or
- all the way there and back if the target is at distance 8 or closer.
The shortest distance to Berlin is 8 (if i count well), and so you will be protected all the way there and back.

If you play with 11.9 (HISTORICALLY ACCURATE ESCORT UNITS) then you do two things differently:
1. You roll for how many units will escort you (the bottom of Escort Availability Table)
2. You set their range to the year (ACCURATE MAXIMUM SAFE RANGES TABLE )

Let me quote the rules (4.2.6, point 4 of the blue frame):

"Count the shortest path from the nearest England Green box (not the 8th Air Force Base) to the Rendezvous Site and place the Range Tracking counter on the FIGHTER ESCORT RANGE TRACKS box of the same number (the Escorts spent that fuel on the way to the Rendezvous Site). From this point on, you will be tracking the new Escorts’ range the same way you tracked the old one (see Rule 4.2.5)."

The rendezvous site between Rotterdam and Munster is 4 boxes away from the Base. So you place the Range Tracking Counter on box 4 and carry on in usual manner. Those 4 "petrol units" have been spent on the way to the rendezvous.

Now look at 4.2.5

Let's say you are picking up a new Escort unit at the rendezvous site.

1. If you are on the way home, you don't even have to track the Escorts' range - if the rendezvous site is within their Maximum Safe Range, they will always make it home.

2. If you are on the way to the target, you will follow the 4.2.6 as usual, but you should track the new Escort range, because they might not have their Maximum Safe Range long enough to protect you all the way there and back and they will leave you when they reach their Maximum Safe Range.
