Formations

I'm trying to understand this game more in-depth to become a better player, but there is one concept I'm yet to grasp fully or even try using and that is attack/movement formations and in what situations to use which. Or can I trust the AI to pick the appropriate one most of the time. What are the benefits "of getting it right"?
