Question on fighters

I’m flying my 4th mission to Rotterdam and it calls for 8 escorts. I’m assuming that this would apply once you can get more then just P-47’s as you only have 6 P-47’s in the beginning. Of course I’m not sure of this as Rotterdam is in the 1942 group and if you destroy the target it’s gone and the 8 escort total wouldn’t make sense.
I could be checking to soon as 22 flak and 7 hits to destroy the target might be pretty hard to accomplish
