significance of dice colours?

I notice some dice are red and I think I have even see a blue die. Any tips?

Sometimes, both dice are rolled but their individual result are not added. For example, when calling the off-board artillery, one die is precision and the other is direction. You could, of course, rolled them one after the other.

ah so the blue die may be for the 'to hit' attempt for ordnance.

No, to-hit ordnance die roll requires the summing of both dice, to generate a number between 2 and 12. In that situation, the color does not matter
