Thanks, i did check that link. I guess just selecting "beta - work in progress" is enough. I don't see anywhere to confirm this selection. How do I tell that I am running the beta?

It runs the Beta unless you opt out of it.

One of my gripes with Steam is it doesn't notify of changes in versions or identify the version in use. Makes it difficult for the developers to troubleshoot a problem because it's not obvious whether the problem is "new" or a residual problem from an earlier version that somehow hadn't been updated.

It should say [beta] in Steam library
