Is there any way to tell how long your units need to form themselves up before an actual attack or do you have to estimate yourself? I know how to make attacks occur at a certain assault time but I'm not sure how much of a time buffer I need to leave between the 'start' and 'assault' times.

Something that can effect the forming up time considerably is if the FUP is exposed to enemy fire.
The larger the formation the more effect this can have, even to the extent that the attack will not start at all.

Its very important especially with large attack formations (Regiment, Division) that you secure the FUP from enemy fire, by reconnoitring it beforehand, including the routes to it, or better still make sure all the units involved in the attack are already in the location of the FUP before you give the attack order.

In RL large forces conducting an attack typically staged to an Assembly Area prior to moving to their FUPs. Perhaps that is something we should consider adding. But Assembly Areas were, as you say normally secured by a smaller force and located away from enemy fire.

There is a good example of it here, at the start of Operation Compass:

The British force made its way to the Ebna Gap, covered by a patrol from the 2nd Battalion, Rifle Brigade (Prince Consort's Own) on the night of the 7 – 8 December 1940. The move forward was conducted via a concentration point called 'Piccadilly Circus' that was partially covered by an RAF bombing raid.

So what would be teh difference of having another AA prior to teh FUP (which is technicaly just another AA and is usually also secured). When getting fired at in the "second AA" the result would be the same.

Cheers,

Since enemy sight on the FUP area is critical due arty barrage, I wonder if the feature smoke-screen has already been implemented.
If not happened yet, we can seriously consider it as a vital criteria for a proper function of performing maneuvres without getting thwarted carefully concocted plans too often.
